Springtime is a welcome sight after the long, dreary months of winter, but it can bring its own challenges – those dreaded allergy symptoms. If you are a sufferer of allergies, you know all too well the scratchy throat, itchy and watery eyes, never-ending sneezing, and pretty much downright misery that comes with this time of year. This can last anywhere from a couple weeks to several months. These symptoms are accepted as common and inevitable, and the only widely known solution is taking over-the-counter drugs. Although, what most people don’t know is that their allergy symptoms can be greatly reduced, and even eliminated, with many natural remedies.

Here are 4 natural remedies to help you ditch your allergy symptoms:

1. NETTLE TEA

Stinging Nettle has been used medicinally for centuries and is commonly used to treat allergy symptoms, otherwise known as hay fever. The leaves of this plant contain histamines, and there is a large history of using histamines to treat allergy symptoms. Nettle has also been traditionally used to treat joint and urinary issues, as well as eczema and rashes.

For best results, it should be consumed before the onset of allergy symptoms, but it can still provide relief if you are already suffering. You can ease your allergies simply by consuming nettle leaves in the form of a tea.

You can find nettle leaf tea here on Amazon or in most health food stores.

2. NETI POT

An increasingly popular and effective allergy solution – Neti pots have been used for hundreds of years in Ayurvedic medicine for clearing the sinuses. Neti pots can help irrigate and clean out your sinuses by removing pollens, congestion, and other allergens from your nasal passages. This can in turn greatly reduce allergy symptoms. A Neti pot is a natural and inexpensive solution for allergy sufferers. Just be sure to use filtered or distilled water – as sterile as possible – to prevent bacteria, chlorine, or other substances present in tap water from entering the sinuses. Also, make sure to wash your Neti pot with a gentle water and vinegar solution after each use.

You can purchase a Neti pot affordably on Amazon.

3. LOCAL HONEY OR BEESWAX

Honey has been shown to be very effective in helping many people manage their allergy symptoms. Honey or beeswax produced locally contains pollens that are prevalent in your current geographic area. By introducing these pollens into your body in small amounts, you can help your body build up a tolerance or immunity to them. The immune system is therefore able to recognize the pollens or allergens and provide a protective response when you are exposed to them again in the future. Look for local, raw honey in your area. All you need is a tablespoon a day of honey to reap the full benefits.

4. GARLIC

Garlic works as a natural antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral, and this is good news for allergy sufferers. Regular consumption of garlic can help ward off bacteria, infections, viruses, and even allergies. Eat a whole clove of garlic twice a day at the first sign of allergy, cold, or flu symptoms. Garlic will vastly boost your immune system and will therefore help ward off allergy symptoms.

When eating garlic, I personally like to eat it pickled in apple cider vinegar. It is not only delicious and mild, but still contains all of the health benefits of raw garlic (and bonus – it’s also fermented!). If the idea of raw or pickled garlic doesn’t appeal to you, you can also choose to take garlic supplements. But keep in mind that this method is not as effective as the others. Try to always purchase organic garlic in whole form and as a supplement.

JUST A QUICK NOTE ABOUT ANTIHISTAMINES:

Antihistamines are helpful as a last resort or for emergency allergy symptoms but should by no means be used regularly or as a long-term solution. This type of medication – anticholinergic – can cause many side effects such as mood changes, dizziness, drowsiness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, urination problems, and weight gain; to just mention a few. Furthermore, according to recent research, using these types of drugs for extended periods of time can be associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s.

If you are a long-term allergy sufferer who is looking for additional immune support and allergy relief, I recommend taking a natural antihistamine supplement like this one. It contains Quercetin, Stinging Nettle, Reishi Mushroom, NAC, and Bromelain – all included to help support the immune system and reduce histamine levels in the body.

If you suffer with allergies year after year, try experimenting with some or all of these natural remedies to help your symptoms. You can ditch the over-the-counter drugs and instead opt for these solutions that have been helpful in treating allergies for ages!
