Could Donald Trump be paying back Putin for his assistance in the 2016 election by handing Putin a victory in Syria in what may be his final months in the White House? That’s what many are speculating as Trump appears to be at the center of too many scandals and investigations for any sane American to keep track of.
Background: During the Obama Admin, Syrian Leader Assad used chemical weapons against his own people, some who were rebelling against him. The United States while fighting ISIS in the area also backed Syria rebels fighting Assad. Arguably, Syria has served as the geographic epicenter of the hottest points of tension between Russia and the United States since the Cold War. The President’s entire cabinet advised against pulling out of Syria and many believe we have not fully defeated ISIS.
Although Confluence does not believe this is the one war we should not get out of, we do see this you know lateral movement by Trump without consultation from our allies working directly with us on missions in the region as a major insult to our status as a country as a military leader in the region and around the world.
This is not the only indication that Trump is handing Putin favors perhaps while on his way out the door. Additionally, he has rejiggered some Russian sanctions to benefit close allies of Putin. This move also came with little to no warning and agonist the counsel of many top advisors.
All this comes as a Vladimir Putin appears to be making one of the biggest military power grabs of his tenure. In recent weeks he has done military tests and flybys among other various actions to concern Nato and our allies around the world. At times the United States has taken an aggressive verbal stance on this, but on the most important issues like Syria the United States has backed down mightily in recent weeks. In other words, the talk may be tough but the United States is no longer carrying or at least using in any way a big stick.
Many are asking why in the world Trump would be handling all this to Putin while he is under immense investigation for his ties to Russia. We have been to. Our best speculation, Putin has a Pee tape and that would be worse for Trump to have come out now than anything about Russia.
