In a major shift of the footing of the White House, Donald Trump lets his longtime attorney Ty Cobb go and replaces him with Bill Clinton’s former impeachment attorney. This signals Donald Trump’s legal team is adopting a more adversarial posture toward the special counsel’s investigation. It also clearly shows what Trump has accepted what might be coming next.
Sources have reported that Cobb has taken an adversarial tone with Trump approach to dealing with the Mueller probe, most notably Trump’s tweets regarding the Special Council investigation. Tensions have been growing behind the scenes.
Cobb is being replaced by Emmet Flood. Although it had been previously reported Flood turned down previous offers to join the Trump legal team, he now comes to Trump’s defense with a highly unique set of qualifications. Emmet Flood has experience defending a sitting U.S. President in impeachment hearings.
The shakeup of Trump’s legal team comes as his lawyers prepare for a legal showdown with Mueller, sources familiar with their thinking have told CNN. It’s the most public signal to date that Trump believes his “fake news” narrative might not be enough to save his presidency.
Flood is aggressive, he’s professional, and he’s experienced. Emmet Flood is not one of Trump’s usual “yes” men. He’s a gamechanger, signaling the game at the White House has changed.
