Do you have a Money allergy? Being a pharmacist as well made me think of this the other day. When I am doing consulting work, I have to check the patient’s allergies right away. In fact, if an allergy is not documented we are not allowed to proceed. There needs to be an NKA (no known allergy). If there is an allergy, such as a sulfa allergy, then I need to check what antibiotics the patient can or cannot be on. Allergies are not something to be careless about.

Allergies can occur at any time in one’s life. Allergies can come and go as well. Sometimes they stay. Then we just avoid the particular allergen. Sometimes the allergy is so severe that anaphylaxis could occur. People carry around diphenhydramine and epi-pens. This has happened to me twice when I was out of the country. Someone at the table ate something – and then, the face starts to flush, get red. You can literally see the reaction start to happen. Could be quite scary.

But what about an allergy to Money?

Sometimes I may come across someone with a Money allergy.

Talking about Money makes them uncomfortable. Thinking about Money makes them hesitate. Receiving Money makes them want to RUN! You can see them kind of squirming right there in their seat. There is a constant struggle with Money. They just have given up altogether on the whole subject of Money.
I mean, an allergy like that could be like anaphylaxis! Since they have an allergy to Money, it may be hard to get one to try getting near Money again. So just like in allergy testing, we start small. Can you get used to seeing a nickel come in? Yes, it’s just like that. You think that a nickel is nothing? I actually know someone that a nickel made someone uncomfortable. With a little help – this woman started appreciating her nickel.

She started feeling like it could be hers. She never felt she was deserving. She never felt Money could be hers. Money was for everyone else. It was just not a possibility that Money would enter into her life. She thought this way her whole life. But starting with this nickel, money began to grow. Slowly at first but Money started to get closer and come in a little bit more.

To handle Money allergies:

1. Know that you have one. Awareness is key. That can be a lifesaver.

2. Know that it can be treated. Treatment is available. There is an answer.

3. Be open to receiving. Start with what you have. Whatever money is coming in. Appreciate it. Gratitude does help.

4. Get comfortable with money. You’ll start to see the uncomfortableness subside.

So here’s to no Money allergies!
