An Open Letter to the “Love and Light” women on the planet.

Reading Time: 7 minutes At the end of the day, you are going to come around and come back to me, and folks like me, for solace and comfort because you will not know how to handle stuff when the crap hits the fan in your orbit. As much as the drama of the world creates resilience in us and helps us live, you are not cultivating this same skill and so you will need me.

But there is one thing you can do so it does not get to that point. You can take the Schlack off your “Love and Light” and vote. Vote for candidates with values that are not obscured by “Love and Light” thinking. Vote for candidates that actually want to bring Love and Light to the world by protecting the human rights of as many people as possible. Please don’t vote for those that want to keep things exclusive for those who have been exclusive. That is not Love and Light!

ARE YOU CHECKING YOUR SMARTPHONE 24-7? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

Reading Time: 6 minutes Whenever I’ve been out to eat at a restaurant recently, I’ve noticed families, couples, and coworkers alike all glued to their phones during a meal. No, this isn’t uncommon, but stopping to really notice these people forgoing in-person communication for their phones has a powerful effect. Specifically, it’s gotten me thinking about the psychological dangers of 24-7 accessibility, and the way it’s shifted our expectations in both personal and professional contexts. Now that smartphones enable us to have constant, efficient and ongoing forms of communication with literally everyone we know, we are now always at anyone’s beck and call. The benefits are clear, but the downsides sometimes feel even clearer.

Keegan-Michael Key and Chris Rock on Voter Suppression – Know Your Rights.

Reading Time: < 1 minute It’s incredibly important to know that voter suppression efforts are underway all over the country. White folks need to be aware that just because you’re not a minority that doesn’t mean you’re immune. You’re not.

Wide-scale voter purges target districts more than specific people. If you live in a high minority district or potentially a highly liberal district a white persons vote is just as likely to be suppressed in some way as anyone else’s.

Voter suppression is usually targeted at minority voters. However, it affects everyone, often in very literal ways.

Watch Keegan-Michael Key and Chris Rock explain what to do if someone tries to stop you from voting.

Whether it’s the need for an escape from the bitter, drab conditions or a desire for a break from the hectic schedule that often accompanies the season, carving out time to head south may be the perfect pick-me-up.

In fact, because of the cluster of holidays and time off from school, the winter months can be the perfect time to get away. Nov. 2 is Dia de los Muertos: No, It’s Not Mexican Halloween

Reading Time: 6 minutes HERE’S ONE THING we know: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Though related, the two annual events differ greatly in traditions and tone. Whereas Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Sure, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. In towns and cities throughout Mexico, revelers don funky makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones.

The rituals are rife with symbolic meaning. The more you understand about this feast for the senses, the more you will appreciate it. Here are 10 essential things you should know about Mexico’s most colorful annual event.

Love is Not Silent in the Face of Injustice

Reading Time: 4 minutes If you are able to look the other way and “busy yourself with happier things”, this is most likely because you are sitting in a place of privilege and whether you realize it or not this privilege you are so fortunate to enjoy puts you in the place of having power to do good for marginalized, oppressed, and persecuted peoples just by virtue of the stand you are willing to take publicly.

I recognize it isn’t always easy to speak up, to take a stand, but you can be assured that your voice, every voice, makes a difference to those who are oppressed.

For those concerned about “vibrations”, I’m not opposed to doing whatever it takes to create “high vibrations.” And, it is essential to remember that the highest vibration is love, and love is not passive, love is active.
